Fungi and Water Molds NQ-DA-PR-0004

A specialized fungus that creates blemishes on the aesthetic floating leaves (pads) of water lilies.

Introduction

A specialized fungus that creates blemishes on the aesthetic floating leaves (pads) of water lilies.

Identification

Small, dull brown to black spots, often with a reddish or yellow margin, initially on the leaf margins. These spots enlarge, merge (become confluent), and can cause leaf rotting or "shot holes".

Pathogen Characteristics

Virulence
Low to moderate; it primarily affects the aesthetics and vigor of the leaves, but rarely kills the entire plant.
Spread Method
Spores (conidia) are spread by wind and water splash between leaves and plants.
Reported Locations
Reported in Japan and commonly found in water gardens globally.

Prevention & Treatment

Prevention Measures

1-Promptly remove any affected leaves as soon as spots appear.
2-Avoid excessive overhead watering in nursery settings.
3-Ensure proper spacing to allow air circulation

Treatment Options

Removal of infected leaves. Fungicides can be used for significant outbreaks in commercial settings, but physical removal is usually sufficient in home ponds.
